Poem Analysis 2- In The Midst of Hardship.

A COLLECTION OF POEMS, SHORT STORIES AND DRAMA FORM 4 AND FORM 5.
THE POEM: IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP BY LATIFF MOHIDIN.
At dawn they returned home
Their soaky clothes torn
And approached the stove
Their limbs marked by scratches
Their legs full of wounds
But on their brows
There was not a sign of despair

The whole day and night just passed
They had to brave the horrendous flood
In the water all the time
Between bloated carcasses
And tiny chips of tree barks
Desperately looking for their son’s
Albino buffalo that was never found

They were born amidst hardship
And grew up without a sigh or a complaint
Now they are in the kitchen, making
Jokes while rolling their cigarette leaves.

Analysis of the poem.

The poem  tells us about the hardship of people who are facing a horrible flood. They are a poor people who have nothing left yet they never complaint of their fate.  In stanza one, the poet said that the people returned home late at dawn with their wet clothes. Their limbs are full of scratches and their legs is full of wound but their faces show no sign of fear or despair.

The second stanza the poet tell us that the whole day and night  just passed and they faced the horrible flood. They have been in the water all the time with the bloated carcasses and tree barks. They are also searching for their precious belonging, the buffalo and it is never found.

In the last stanza, the poet describes that they are born with hardship surrounded their life but they face it without complaining. Even they are in the hardest time of their life, they are still together in the kitchen, making jokes and smoke their cigarette.

a very terrible flood

To me, this poem portrays that even if we have some trouble or difficulty in life, we should never complaint and we should embrace it without losing hope and just remember that everything happened for a reason. It is life. That is how we deal with it, we embrace it.
